*** Please read the scripture from the Bible first as this is God's good Word!! ***
Elisha was a great teacher, in which he taught God's servants the word of God. He not only taught what was said but how to apply it to their personal lives.
Elisha's servants approached Elisha with an idea of building a new dwelling and would get the material for the dwelling near the Jordan River. Elisha responded by saying "Do it". One of the servants asked Elisha to come with and Elisha answered, "I will go".
They all went on to the Jordan and proceeded by cutting down some trees for lumber to use for their new dwelling. As one of the followers was cutting down a tree, the ax head flew off and fell into the water as he cried, "Alas, master, for it was borrowed." The servant was concerned for the mere fact that the ax was borrowed, and now he has lost it.
He showed Elisha where it had fallen into the water, and by miracle of God the iron ax head floated to the top of the water and the servant grabbed it.
This may seem like an insignificant story of the Bible, and you may ask what is the purpose of this story or what can we learn from this. God has put forth the most divine book for us to learn from and since he makes ABSOLUTELY NO mistakes, this is recorded in the bible for a reason. Let us look and see how we can apply it to our life.
Serving God involves risk. If you always want a sure thing, you will never serve him, but when you don't serve him you run the greatest risk which is ALWAYS failing. So go ahead and do what God wants you to do, trust Him to handle the risks and worries.
- Trust god as you face the risk of broadening participation. ( In our story, when the fellow servants approached Elisha about building a new dwelling, Elisha said, "Go do it", he didn't intervene and say "I will manage your works". He trusted that God would lead their effort for it would be done in God's Glory.)
- God's work demands the multiplication of workers.
(Elisha was teaching many servants of God, to spread the good work, God's spiritual army. You discipleship with others so that they in turn can become disciples and create disciple-makers and spread the word of God.)
- God's work demands the training of workers.
(Elisha took the time to train his fellow servants, and gave them the knowledge and word of God.)
- God's work demands the unleashing of workers to the work.
(Elisha left the responsibility with his servants and didn't intervene.)
- God's work demands the encouraging of the workers.
(Elisha encouraged his servants to go forth and build the dwelling.)
- God's work demands that you take the ultimate risk of chartering into the unknown. (Everyone is scared of the unknown, but sometimes God calls us into the unknown, and we must obey and place all of our TRUST in Him ONLY.)
- Trust God as you face the risk of personal failure. (We as humans are so afraid of failing, and are so prideful that we don't want to fail because we will be looked upon as failures. Sometimes this fear hinders us and we don't take the risks that God calls us to take.)
- Most people who want to serve God have many positive traits. (When we serve God we must place all our pride aside, and sometimes our own ideas because sometimes our own ideas are not in line with our Lords plan. We must proceed with a positive attitude, and a humble heart)
- Every person who serves God faces the inevitably of personal failure. (We are all imperfect and are prone to failure as Christians and non-Christians. Just as the servant failed to cut the tree and broke the ax, God reminded the servant that we fail sometimes but through God all things are possible)
- He calls us to serve despite our imperfections, and allows us to fail to remind us we need Him always. (Sometimes bad things happen to us, and the fact of the matter is that God allows those things to happen so that we may turn to Him, and and only Him ALWAYS.)
- The risk of borrowed resources. ( We have all borrowed and know the risks associated with borrowing. )
- When resources are borrowed, there is a risk to the lender. (The servant was worried that he had broken the ax that didn't belong to him)
- When resources are borrowed there is a risk to the borrower.
- Reality is that nothing belongs to us humans that are either borrowers or lenders, it belongs to God. All creatures and things in God's Universe belong to God. So in other words, we are all borrowing from God.
